Alnitak, the left most star in Orion’s belt, neighbors two large nebulae about 1400 light years away.
The Horsehead Nebula invokes memories of those classic Hubble Telescope shots. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of telescope at my disposal. Furthermore, my poor camera isn’t too sensitive at capturing those red colors due to the IR cut filter present in consumer DSLRs. But I figured this was worth a shot.
3.4 hours of images and several trials at processing later, I was fairly happy with my result. Not going to win any awards, but you can distinctly make out the Horsehead, and the Flame Nebula looks pretty good too!
