M42 – Orion Nebula

M42 is the easiest nebula to spot, visible to the naked eye. It can be seen in the constellation Orion, right under the belt, forming Orion’s dagger. It is about 1350 light years away and about 24 light years wide. It is accompanied by the Running Man nebula (left of center).

I was really excited for M42. I knew it would be an easy target perfect for a beginner, but still yield a great picture.

It certainly did not disappoint. Look at how much detail there is in a single 45 second sub!

45” sub of M42

Over several nights in December and January I got about 2.9 hours worth of images.
